The PQL vs MQL debate usually gets framed as a choice. Product-led companies should use PQLs. Sales-led companies should use MQLs. Pick your lane.

That framing is wrong for most B2B SaaS teams. If you run any combination of self-serve signups, free trials, and sales-assisted deals, you have buyers entering through both the product and through marketing. Why the distinction matters

Neither framework tells the full story on its own. MQLs can be high-intent but low-fit. A student requesting a demo for research looks the same as a VP evaluating a purchase in most MQL models. When MQLs Make Sense

MQLs aren't outdated. They're incomplete for PLG, but they're still the right primary signal for certain motions and buying stages.

Hybrid Signal in Action

Account X has a marketing manager who requested a demo (MQL signal) and three engineers who've been using the free tier for two weeks (PQL signal). Neither signal alone tells the full story. Together, they show a team that's researching and evaluating simultaneously. This account should be at the top of the queue.

A scoring system that sees both signals will rank Scenario C significantly higher than A or B alone. A system that only sees marketing or only sees product will treat C the same as A or B and miss the account-level picture.

Define your engagement thresholds (MQL criteria)

Which marketing actions indicate real buying intent versus casual browsing? Not all engagement is equal.

High-intent actions worth weighting heavily:

  • Demo or sales conversation request - Explicit declared intent
  • Pricing page visits - Especially repeated visits in a short window
